Fizdale has made quite the name for himself as the head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies for the past two seasons. With a move to New York, all eyes are on Fizdale for this NBA season.

David Fizdale was named the 29th head coach in New York Knickerbockers franchise history on May 7, 2018.

Fizdale, 44, led the Memphis Grizzlies to a 50-51 (.495) regular season record as head coach over the past two seasons (2016-17 and 2017-18), which included a trip to the NBA Playoffs in 2017.

Prior to joining the Grizzlies for his first NBA head coaching assignment, Fizdale spent the previous eight seasons (2008-09 thru 2015-16) with the Miami Heat as an assistant coach, including the final two years as assistant head coach under Erik Spoelstra. During his tenure in Miami, the Heat won back-to-back NBA Championships in 2012 and 2013, and more Playoff games (70) and series (15) than any other NBA team.

With a decade-and-a-half of NBA coaching experience, the Los Angeles native was an assistant coach for one season in Golden State (2003-04) and for four seasons in Atlanta (2004-05 thru 2007-08).

Fizdale began his coaching career in the college ranks, serving as an assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of San Diego (1998-99 thru 2001-02) and at Fresno State (2002-03). His first NBA job was as a member of the Heat’s video department in 1997-98.

Fizdale was a three-year starter at the University of San Diego and was named to the All-West Coast Conference team as a senior in 1995-96 when he led the Conference in assists with 7.0 apg.

Born on June 16, 1974 in Los Angeles, David earned a bachelor’s degree in communications with a minor in sociology from San Diego in 1996.

David and his wife Natasha and their five dogs reside in Westchester County, N.Y. He has one son, Kyle Jackson.
