About Small Vines Wines:
Author, Jancis Robinson, states in the Oxford Companion to Wine “High vine densities lead to improved wine quality…the world’s most famous vineyards, especially in the Old World, have very narrow spacings.” Owning only a pick-up truck and a shovel; one young wine steward, Paul Sloan, dreamt of making Estate Grown, world class, artisan wines far before he could afford to buy an “Estate” in California. Compelled by an ethereal experience with a rare Burgundy one night at work, and the books he had read, he hatched his plan to innovate winegrowing in California and specialize in growing only small vines.

Somehow-after a viticulture degree and a pilgrimage to Domaine de la Romanee-Conti under his belt- he was able to convince a few believing land owners and wineries to allow him to plant state-of-the art high-density vineyards for them. Vigneron Paul Sloan of Small Vines is committed to low yields when it comes to making the finest wine. “A large over cropped vine carries too much fruit and dilutes the end product- the wine.” Sloan believes this to be true so much that he has trademarked the saying “the smaller the vine, the better the wine” TM.

Fast forward to today, Paul and Kathryn Sloan are making balanced, low-input Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from organically farmed 4 x 4 and 4 x meter vineyards that only they have planted and currently farm. First, leasing back the original properties and then finally grasping the goal of being able to buy a property- they created their own dream come true. Now in 2018, they have their own bricks-and-mortar winemaking facility on a historic property they bought in Sebastopol. After almost twenty years of growing grapes with Swiss-watch precision, the Sloan’s have become an “instant” success.

These Small Vines Wines are Grower-Produced, and 100% of their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are made entirely from high-density, estate vineyards planted and farmed organically by Paul and Kathryn Sloan. These wines are available direct from the winery at or at select high-end restaurants throughout the Nation.
